Jan played flute at the wedding of a friend’s daughter this weekend, and I went along as the musician’s page turner and chauffer.
Rather than just go “there and back again,” we followed Highway 101 south through Raymond and South Bend, then went northward up the peninsula until reaching Ocean Park.
We stayed at a rental home called Journey’s End in Ocean, Park, WA. What a delight! A plethora of windows faced the dunes and Pacific Ocean, and a pathway nearby leads directly to the beach. We had time for one walk hand-in-hand along the windswept, sandy beach.
The wedding was held in a senior center in Klipsan Beach, and it was truly a community effort. Friends and family gathered to create a wonderful wedding atmosphere. Jan played flute while folks were being seated, and her music lent life and love to the room. The beach-themed wedding was entirely appropriate for the location. Everyone was touched by the vows spoken by the bride and groom, and afterwards, we dined and danced until late at night.
To return home, we drove eastbound on Highway 4 along the Columbia River. Rather than work our way through Longview and Kelso to reach Interstate 5, we took the back road to Castle Rock before getting on I-5 northbound.
A late lunch at Spiffy’s, then back on I-5…but soon the interstate plugged up with weekend travelers also heading north, and traffic slowed to a crawl. We got off the freeway at Chehalis, and took back roads to Grand Mound. From there, we went west on Highway 12 to get to Highway 8, then cut across at McLeary to complete the circle and arrive home. It was a long drive, but we were blessed with good weather and scenic views not available from the freeway.
