Planning for a San Juan Islands sailing trip

For those who wish to follow along, I’ll be planning an August 2011 sailing trip in the San Juan Islands. Sailors, feel free to make this interactive and ask questions in the comments section as the plan develops.

Thursday dawned clear and warm, and I looked forward to working on getting the boat ready for a Friday morning launch and some quiet sailing with my friend Jim. By late Thursday afternoon, the boat was ready. I had raised and lowered the mast, checked the sails, made sure I had sufficient food and water, checked my safety gear, and loaded my sleeping gear and clothes. The VHF radio was working, batteries charged, and outboard fuel was fresh.

Planning a Puget Sound Sailing Trip

Every year I get asked: how do you plan your sailing trips? When planning a trip, I ask myself some basic questions, and from there, consider conditions and amenities specific to that trip.

We sail a 19-foot West Wight Potter, manufactured by International Marine. Whisper is a trailerable sailboat with a classic heritage, constructed of modern materials. I usually describe voyaging in a small, trailerable sailboat as akin to camping in a hard tent. Many of the same clothes, gear, food, and cooking methods are the same as you would use for backpacking or tent camping.
